Stephen F. Austin
Born November 3, 1793
American empresario known as the "Father of Texas" for leading the first large Anglo-American settlement there.
Stephen F. Austin was born in Wythe County, Virginia, and moved with his family to Missouri as a young boy. He studied in Connecticut and at Transylvania University in Kentucky, then managed the family business and served in the Missouri territorial legislature. His father, Moses Austin, had received permission to settle families in Texas, and Stephen took over the project. Working with the new Mexican government, he brought about 300 families, known as the Old Three Hundred, to land along the Colorado River by 1825, and hundreds more followed. When the Texas Revolution began in 1835, volunteers chose him to lead their army. He later served as a commissioner to the United States and became the first secretary of state of the Republic of Texas.

Walker Evans
Born November 3, 1903
American photographer whose documentary images of Depression-era America shaped modern photography.
Walker Evans was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Phillips Academy before briefly studying at Williams College. He spent time in Paris hoping to become a writer, but after returning to New York in the late 1920s he turned to photography. From 1935 he worked for the Farm Security Administration, recording small towns, farms, and working families during the Great Depression. In 1936 he and writer James Agee spent time with sharecropper families in Hale County, Alabama, work that became the book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941). The Museum of Modern Art showed his exhibition American Photographs in 1938. He later worked for Time and Fortune magazines and taught at Yale University from 1965 to 1972.
