John Keats
Born October 31, 1795
English Romantic poet whose odes, including "Ode to a Nightingale" and "Ode on a Grecian Urn," remain widely read.
John Keats was an English poet of the Romantic era, born in London to a family of modest means. He trained in medicine, studying at Guy's Hospital and qualifying as an apothecary in 1816, but he chose poetry instead of a medical career. The editor Leigh Hunt published his early sonnets and introduced him to London's literary circles. His first book, Poems, came out in 1817, followed by the long poem Endymion in 1818. In 1819 he wrote his celebrated odes, including "Ode to a Nightingale," "Ode on a Grecian Urn," and "To Autumn." A collection featuring Lamia and The Eve of St. Agnes appeared in 1820. Known for vivid imagery, his odes are counted among the finest poems in the English language.
