Famous people born on November 2
Daniel Boone
Born November 2, 1734
American frontiersman and explorer who helped open Kentucky to settlement and founded Boonesborough.
Daniel Boone was born in a log cabin in Pennsylvania, the sixth child of a Quaker family. He had little schooling but learned to read and write from his mother and picked up hunting and wilderness skills from his father. His family later moved to North Carolina, where he married Rebecca Bryan in 1756; the couple raised ten children. In 1769 Boone explored Kentucky and spent two years hunting in its wilderness. In 1775 he led a crew of axmen who cut a trail through the Cumberland Gap that became part of the Wilderness Road, and he founded the fort of Boonesborough on the Kentucky River. He served as a militia officer, sat in the Virginia legislature in the 1780s, and moved to Missouri in 1799.

James K. Polk
Born November 2, 1795
11th president of the United States, whose single term greatly expanded the nation's territory.
James K. Polk was born in a log cabin in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, the eldest of ten children. He graduated first in his class from the University of North Carolina in 1818, became a lawyer, and entered politics in Tennessee. He served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, two of them as Speaker, and then one term as governor of Tennessee. In 1844 he won the presidency as a little-known "dark horse" candidate. As the 11th president from 1845 to 1849, he lowered tariffs, restored the Independent Treasury, settled the Oregon boundary with Britain, and gained California and New Mexico through the Mexican-American War. True to his pledge, he did not seek a second term.

Burt Lancaster
Born November 2, 1913
American film star who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Elmer Gantry.
Burt Lancaster grew up in East Harlem in New York City and attended NYU on an athletic scholarship before working as a circus acrobat. After serving in the Army during World War II, he landed a part in a Broadway play, which drew attention from Hollywood. His first film, The Killers (1946), made him a star, and he went on to appear in about 70 movies over four decades. Known for blending physical strength with emotional depth, he starred in From Here to Eternity, Sweet Smell of Success, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Birdman of Alcatraz, Atlantic City, and Field of Dreams. He won the Best Actor Oscar for Elmer Gantry and co-founded a production company that made the Best Picture winner Marty (1955).
