Born November 6, 1854
American composer and bandleader known as "The March King," who wrote "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and "Semper Fidelis."
John Philip Sousa was an American composer and bandleader born in Washington, D.C. He joined the U.S. Marine Band as an apprentice at age 13 and served as its leader from 1880 to 1892, turning it into the country's top military band and conducting for five presidents. Popular pieces such as "Semper Fidelis" (1888) and "The Washington Post" (1889) earned him the nickname "The March King." In 1892 he formed his own concert band, which he led for 39 years and took on tours of Europe and around the world. He wrote 136 marches, including "The Stars and Stripes Forever," which became the official national march of the United States in 1987, plus operettas and songs. He also helped develop the sousaphone, a kind of bass tuba.
