Hedy Lamarr
Born November 9, 1914
Austrian-born Hollywood star of Algiers and Samson and Delilah who co-invented a frequency-hopping radio system used in modern wireless technology.
Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress and inventor. Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna, she was signed to MGM by Louis B. Mayer, who gave her the name Hedy Lamarr. She became a Hollywood star in films such as Algiers (1938), Boom Town (1940), Ziegfeld Girl (1941), and Samson and Delilah (1949), and later produced some of her own movies. During World War II she worked with composer George Antheil on a patented frequency-hopping system meant to keep radio-guided torpedoes from being jammed. Decades later, the idea became a basis for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. She received the Pioneer Award in 1997 and joined the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

Benjamin Banneker
Born November 9, 1731
Self-taught African American mathematician and astronomer who published almanacs and helped survey the land for Washington, D.C.
Benjamin Banneker was a free Black American farmer, mathematician, and astronomer from Maryland. With little formal schooling, he taught himself astronomy and mathematics while running a tobacco farm near Baltimore. At about age 22 he took apart a borrowed watch and carved a wooden clock of his own that kept accurate time for more than 50 years. In 1791 surveyor Andrew Ellicott hired him to help survey the territory for the new national capital, where he recorded the movements of stars. During the 1790s he published a series of almanacs filled with his astronomical calculations. In 1791 he also wrote to Thomas Jefferson, sending a copy of his almanac and arguing against slavery and for racial equality.
