Margaret Mitchell
Born November 8, 1900
American author and journalist who wrote Gone with the Wind, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the Civil War South.
Margaret Mitchell was an American writer from Atlanta, Georgia. After studying at Smith College, she worked for the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine in the 1920s under the byline "Peggy Mitchell," writing well over a hundred articles and also reviewing books. She then spent several years writing a long novel about the South during and after the Civil War. Published in 1936, Gone with the Wind sold more than a million copies in its first six months and won the Pulitzer Prize the following year. The story reached an even larger audience through the Oscar-winning 1939 film. It was the only book she published in her lifetime, and it has been translated into many languages, though critics have faulted its picture of slavery.
