Martin Luther
Born November 10, 1483
German monk and theologian whose 95 Theses of 1517 launched the Protestant Reformation and gave rise to Lutheranism.
Martin Luther was a German theologian born in Eisleben, in Saxony. He studied at the University of Erfurt, entered a monastery, and was ordained a priest in 1507. After earning a doctorate in theology in 1512, he became a professor of the Bible at the University of Wittenberg. On October 31, 1517, he published his 95 Theses, which challenged the Church's sale of indulgences and helped spark the Protestant Reformation. He refused to take back his views at the Diet of Worms in 1521 and was excommunicated by the pope. Luther translated the Bible into German so ordinary people could read it, wrote the Small Catechism, and married former nun Katharina von Bora in 1525. His teachings became the basis of Lutheranism.
