Robert Louis Stevenson
Born November 13, 1850
Scottish novelist and poet who wrote Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, into a family of well-known lighthouse engineers. He entered the University of Edinburgh at 17 planning to follow the family trade, then switched to law and was admitted to the bar in 1875, but he never practiced. Instead he became a writer, and his travels through Europe and beyond fed his stories. In 1880 he married Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne, whom he had followed to California. In a burst of creativity in the 1880s he published Treasure Island, A Child's Garden of Verses, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. He later made his home on an estate in Samoa, where people called him Tusitala, meaning teller of tales.

Whoopi Goldberg
Born November 13, 1955
American actress, comedian, and talk-show host who won an Oscar for Ghost and is one of the rare EGOT winners.
Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson in New York City and grew up in a housing project raised by a single mother. She developed her comedy in California, and her one-woman production The Spook Show drew the attention of director Mike Nichols, who brought it to Broadway in 1984; its recording earned her a Grammy. Her first major film role, in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple (1985), won her a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Ghost (1990) and starred in the comedy Sister Act (1992). She has also hosted the Academy Awards and has been a moderator of the daytime talk show The View since 2007. She holds an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

Born November 13, 1856
American lawyer known as the people's attorney who became the first Jewish justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Louis Brandeis was born in Louisville, Kentucky, to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Prague. He graduated first in his class from Harvard Law School in 1877 and helped found the Harvard Law Review. As a lawyer in Massachusetts he earned the nickname the people's attorney by fighting for consumers and workers. He created the Brandeis brief, a legal argument backed by economic and social data and expert opinion. His 1914 book Other People's Money criticized the power of investment bankers. President Woodrow Wilson named him to the Supreme Court in 1916, making him its first Jewish justice, and he served until 1939, defending free speech. Brandeis University in Massachusetts is named for him.
