W. C. Handy
Born November 16, 1873
American composer and bandleader known as the Father of the Blues, writer of St. Louis Blues and The Memphis Blues.
W. C. Handy, born William Christopher Handy in Florence, Alabama, grew up in a minister's family but chose a life in music. He became a skilled cornet and trumpet player and from 1903 to 1921 led his own orchestra, the Knights of Pythias, out of Clarksdale, Mississippi. Absorbing the music of the Mississippi Delta and Memphis, he helped bring the blues into popular music by blending it with ragtime. His best-known songs include The Memphis Blues (1912), St. Louis Blues (1914), and Beale Street Blues (1916). He co-founded a music publishing company to release his work and put together collections of spirituals and blues. His 1941 autobiography was titled Father of the Blues.
