Alan Shepard
Born November 18, 1923
U.S. Navy test pilot and NASA astronaut who became the first American in space and later walked on the Moon.
Alan Shepard was an American astronaut and naval aviator from East Derry, New Hampshire. He served on a Navy destroyer in the Pacific during World War II, earned his pilot's wings in 1947, and trained at the Navy's Test Pilot School in 1950. In 1959 NASA chose him as one of the original seven Mercury astronauts. On May 5, 1961, he rode the Freedom 7 capsule on a 15-minute flight that made him the first American in space. He later led the Astronaut Office, and in 1971 he commanded Apollo 14, becoming the fifth person to walk on the Moon. During that mission he famously hit golf balls on the lunar surface. He retired from NASA and the Navy in 1974 and went into business in Houston.
