Voltaire
Born November 21, 1694
French Enlightenment writer and philosopher famous for the satirical novel Candide and his defense of religious tolerance and free speech.
Voltaire was the pen name of François-Marie Arouet, a Paris-born writer who became one of the leading voices of the Enlightenment. In 1726 he went into exile in England, where he stayed for nearly three years. Inspired by thinkers such as Isaac Newton and John Locke, he used sharp wit and satire to argue for reason, progress, and reform. His large body of work includes the play Zaïre, the history The Age of Louis XIV, the Philosophical Dictionary, and his best-known book, the comic novella Candide (1759). He spent his later years at Ferney and argued throughout his life for religious tolerance and freedom of speech.

Stan Musial
Born November 21, 1920
American baseball Hall of Famer nicknamed "Stan the Man," who starred for the St. Louis Cardinals for 22 seasons.
Stan Musial grew up in Donora, Pennsylvania, and spent his entire 22-season major league career with the St. Louis Cardinals, mostly as an outfielder. Known as "Stan the Man," he batted from an unusual corkscrew stance yet stayed remarkably consistent at the plate. He finished with 3,630 hits, a .331 career batting average, and 475 home runs, and he was chosen as an All-Star 24 times. Musial won the National League Most Valuable Player award three times, in 1943, 1946, and 1948, and helped the Cardinals capture three World Series titles. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
