Franklin Pierce
Born November 23, 1804
Fourteenth president of the United States, a New Hampshire Democrat who held the office from 1853 to 1857.
Franklin Pierce was an American politician from Hillsboro, New Hampshire, whose father served two terms as the state's governor. After graduating from Bowdoin College in Maine in 1824, he entered the New Hampshire legislature and later became speaker of its House. He went on to represent his state in the U.S. House and then in the U.S. Senate from 1837 to 1841. During the Mexican-American War he served as a brigadier general under General Winfield Scott. A Democrat, Pierce won the 1852 presidential election and served one term as the 14th president, from 1853 to 1857. While in office he signed the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which let settlers in those territories decide the question of slavery for themselves.
