Andrew Carnegie
Born November 25, 1835
Scottish-born American industrialist who built Carnegie Steel and later gave away much of his fortune to libraries and other public causes.
Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, the son of a handloom weaver, and moved with his family to Pennsylvania in 1848. As a boy he worked in a cotton mill and then delivered telegrams, which led to a job with the Pennsylvania Railroad, where he rose to superintendent of the Pittsburgh division. He invested wisely and turned to steel, adopting the Bessemer process and controlling each stage of production. In 1901 he sold Carnegie Steel to J.P. Morgan's U.S. Steel for $480 million. Carnegie argued in "The Gospel of Wealth" (1889) that the rich should use their money for the public good. He paid for more than 2,500 libraries, Carnegie Hall, and the school that became Carnegie Mellon University.

Joe DiMaggio
Born November 25, 1914
American baseball center fielder nicknamed the Yankee Clipper, famous for his record 56-game hitting streak with the New York Yankees.

He first starred for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League before joining the New York Yankees in 1936. Known as "Joltin' Joe" and "the Yankee Clipper," he played center field for New York through 1951, apart from three years of U.S. Army service during World War II. In 1941 he got a hit in 56 games in a row, a record that still stands. He was named the American League's MVP three times and helped the Yankees win nine World Series titles. He retired with a .325 batting average and 361 home runs and joined the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
