Born November 17, 1906
Japanese engineer and industrialist who founded Honda and built it into a leading maker of motorcycles and cars.
Soichiro Honda was a Japanese engineer and businessman from Shizuoka Prefecture. He learned his trade in his father's bicycle repair shop and, at age 15, became an apprentice at an auto repair shop in Tokyo before opening his own garage in Hamamatsu. He later made piston rings and earned more than 100 patents. After World War II he started the Honda Technical Research Institute, which first built small engines for bicycles and grew into Honda Motor Company. By 1959 Honda was the world's leading motorcycle maker. The company began selling cars in 1963 and introduced the Civic in 1973, and its CVCC engine met U.S. emission rules without a catalytic converter. Honda stepped down as company president in 1973 and entered the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1989.
