Claude Monet
Born November 14, 1840
French painter who led the Impressionist movement and is famous for his Water Lilies series painted at Giverny.
Claude Monet was born in Paris and grew up in the port town of Le Havre, where he first became known for drawing caricatures. His first teacher, Eugène Boudin, showed him how to paint outdoors. In Paris he became close to artists such as Renoir, Sisley, and Cézanne, and he began trying to capture fleeting impressions of light rather than exact detail. His painting Impression, Sunrise gave the Impressionist movement its name after the group's independent exhibition of 1874. Later he painted series showing the same subject in changing light, including haystacks and Rouen Cathedral. His gardens at Giverny inspired the Water Lilies paintings that filled much of his later career and remain among the most loved works of modern art.

Condoleezza Rice
Born November 14, 1954
American political scientist who served as U.S. national security adviser and as the 66th secretary of state.
Condoleezza Rice was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She first planned to become a concert pianist but turned to international politics after taking a course with Josef Korbel, and she became an expert on the Soviet Union. She earned degrees from the University of Denver and the University of Notre Dame, finishing her Ph.D. in 1981. At Stanford University she became the first woman and first African American to serve as provost. In 2001 President George W. Bush appointed her national security adviser, the first African American woman in that post. She then served as the 66th U.S. secretary of state from 2005 to 2009. In 2012 she became one of the first two women admitted to Augusta National Golf Club.

Robert Fulton
Born November 14, 1765
American inventor and engineer who built the Clermont, the first commercially successful steamboat.
Robert Fulton was born on a farm in Pennsylvania and began his career as an artist, studying painting in London with Benjamin West and working as a portrait painter. He gradually turned to engineering, designing machines for dredging and rope-making, and in 1800 he launched an experimental submarine called the Nautilus. With financial backing from Robert R. Livingston, he set out to build a practical steamboat. In August 1807 his Clermont traveled up the Hudson River from New York to Albany and back, silencing critics who had called the project Fulton's Folly. The boat carried paying passengers and proved that steam travel on rivers could make money. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006.
