Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Born August 28, 1749
German poet, playwright, and novelist best known for the drama Faust and the novel The Sorrows of Young Werther.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a German writer whose talents reached far beyond poetry. Born in Frankfurt, he went to Leipzig University to study law, but his poems soon drew more attention than his legal studies. His novel The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) made him famous across Europe. In 1775 he joined the court at Weimar, where he held government posts and spent years on science and philosophy. A trip to Italy in 1786 renewed his passion for writing. His most celebrated work, Faust, retells the old legend of a scholar who strikes a deal with the devil. Goethe also wrote plays and studied nature, and his ideas shaped Romanticism and later movements.
