Lyndon B. Johnson
Born August 27, 1908
36th president of the United States, who signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and launched the Great Society.
Lyndon Baines Johnson was born near Stonewall, Texas, and worked his way through Southwest Texas State Teachers College, later teaching school in Houston. He entered politics as a congressional aide and won a seat in the U.S. House in 1937. He moved to the Senate in 1949 and became Senate Majority Leader in 1955, the youngest person ever to hold that post. Johnson served as vice president under John F. Kennedy and became president in November 1963, then won a full term in 1964. His Great Society program brought major laws, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and Medicare. He chose not to run again in 1968 and retired to his Texas ranch.

Man Ray
Born August 27, 1890
American photographer, painter, and filmmaker who was a leading figure in the Dada and Surrealist art movements.
Man Ray was born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He worked as a painter, photographer, filmmaker, and maker of unusual art objects, and he became the only American to play a central part in both the Dada and Surrealist movements. After early years in New York, he moved to Paris, where he spent much of his career. There he accidentally discovered a way to make pictures without a camera by placing objects on light-sensitive paper and exposing them to light. He called these images rayographs. He also experimented with solarization, which gives photographs a strange glowing outline. His well-known works include the photograph Le Violon d'Ingres and the sculpture The Gift, and he also made experimental films.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
Born August 27, 1770
German philosopher whose dialectical view of history and ideas shaped later movements from Marxism to existentialism.
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and studied philosophy and theology at the University of Tübingen. He worked as a private tutor in Bern and Frankfurt, then taught at the University of Jena, where he published The Phenomenology of Spirit in 1807. He later edited a newspaper, ran a secondary school in Nuremberg, and taught at Heidelberg before taking the chair of philosophy at the University of Berlin in 1818. His other major books include Science of Logic and Philosophy of Right. Hegel described history and thought as moving forward through a dialectic, in which opposing ideas give rise to new ones. Thinkers who followed, from Marxists to existentialists, built on his ideas or argued against them.
