George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, a British novelist, essayist, and critic born in Motihari, India. As a young man he served in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma from 1922 to 1927, an experience that turned him into a political and literary rebel. His early books included Down and Out in Paris and London and The Road to Wigan Pier. He went to Spain to report on its civil war, joined a Republican militia, and described the experience in Homage to Catalonia. He is best remembered for Animal Farm (1945), a satirical fable aimed at the Soviet system, and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), a dark picture of life under total government control.
