Alan Turing
Born June 23, 1912
British mathematician and logician whose ideas laid the foundations of computer science and artificial intelligence.
Alan Turing was a British mathematician and logician born in London. He studied mathematics at King's College, Cambridge, and later earned a PhD after spending time at Princeton. In 1936 he wrote "On Computable Numbers," which described an imaginary device now called the Turing machine, a basic model of how computers work. During World War II he worked at Bletchley Park, where he helped break the German Enigma code, and he received the OBE for that service. After the war he helped develop early computers at the National Physical Laboratory and Manchester University. His 1948 report "Intelligent Machinery" introduced key ideas of artificial intelligence, and he also studied how living things grow their shapes.
