Edgar Degas
Born July 19, 1834
French Impressionist artist celebrated for his paintings, pastels, and sculptures of ballet dancers and Parisian life.
Edgar Degas was a French artist from Paris who worked as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker. He is linked with the Impressionist movement, but he stood apart from many of its members through his close attention to the human figure. Degas recorded everyday Parisian life, portraying ballet dancers, laundresses, cabaret singers, and hat makers. Dancers in rehearsal became one of his best-known subjects, seen in works such as The Ballet Class and Dancers at the Barre. Other notable pictures include L'Absinthe and Cotton Office at New Orleans. In his later years he made wide use of pastels. His paintings, sculptures, and prints are held by major museums, including the Tate in London.

Samuel Colt
Born July 19, 1814
American inventor and industrialist who patented the revolver and helped pioneer mass production with interchangeable parts.
Samuel Colt was an American inventor and manufacturer from Hartford, Connecticut. While working as a teenage sailor, he carved a wooden model of a gun with a rotating cylinder. He patented his revolver in England and France in 1835 and in the United States in 1836. His first factory, in Paterson, New Jersey, closed in 1842, but a large government order during the Mexican-American War allowed him to restart production in 1847. In Hartford he built a huge private armory, and in 1855 he incorporated Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company. Working with engineer Elisha King Root, he helped pioneer mass production using machines and interchangeable parts, methods later adopted by other American industries.
