Edmund Hillary
Born July 20, 1919
New Zealand mountaineer and explorer who, with Tenzing Norgay, first reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.
Edmund Hillary was a mountaineer, explorer, and humanitarian from Auckland, New Zealand. As a young man he kept bees with his brother, a job that left him free to climb in his spare time. On May 29, 1953, he and Sherpa climber Tenzing Norgay became the first people to stand on top of Mount Everest, and Queen Elizabeth II knighted him soon after. In 1958 he led New Zealand's team on the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition and reached the South Pole by tractor. He started the Himalayan Trust in 1960, which built schools and hospitals in Nepal, and later served as New Zealand's high commissioner to India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. His face appears on New Zealand's five-dollar note.

Carlos Santana
Born July 20, 1947
Mexican-born American guitarist whose band Santana blended rock with Latin rhythms on hits like "Oye Como Va" and "Smooth."
Carlos Santana is a guitarist and bandleader born in Autlán de Navarro, Mexico. In 1966 he formed the Santana Blues Band in San Francisco, a group soon known simply as Santana. The band gained wide attention with its performance at Woodstock in 1969. Santana's sound mixes rock, blues, jazz, salsa, and African rhythms, and his clear, singing guitar tone is easy to recognize. The 1970 album Abraxas included "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va." Decades later, the 1999 album Supernatural became a huge comeback, led by the No. 1 single "Smooth" with Rob Thomas. He joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, received Kennedy Center Honors in 2013, and founded the Milagro Foundation to help young people.

Born July 20, 1822
Austrian monk and scientist whose pea plant experiments laid the foundation of modern genetics.
Gregor Mendel was a monk and scientist born in Heinzendorf, in the Austrian Empire (now Hynčice, Czech Republic). In 1843 he joined the Augustinian monastery of St. Thomas in Brno, where he later became abbot. Starting around 1854, he spent about eight years breeding pea plants, comparing traits such as tall and short stems or smooth and wrinkled seeds across tens of thousands of plants. He found that traits are passed down in predictable patterns, now known as the laws of segregation and independent assortment. He published the results in 1866 as "Experiments on Plant Hybrids," but few people noticed. Around 1900, other botanists confirmed his findings, and he is now called the father of modern genetics.
