James Cagney
Born July 17, 1899
American actor famous for tough-guy gangster roles and his Oscar-winning song-and-dance turn in Yankee Doodle Dandy.
James Cagney was an American actor who began as a song-and-dance performer in vaudeville and later found success on Broadway. After his film debut in 1930, he signed with Warner Bros. and became a star playing a menacing gangster in The Public Enemy (1931). He went on to appear in more than sixty films, including Angels with Dirty Faces and White Heat. His energetic singing and dancing as George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. He retired in 1961 to a farm in New York State. He received the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award in 1974 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 1980.

German politician who served as chancellor from 2005 to 2021, the first woman to hold that office.
Angela Merkel is a German politician who led Germany as chancellor from 2005 to 2021. Born in Hamburg, she grew up in East Germany, studied at the University of Leipzig, and earned a doctorate. She then worked as a research scientist until 1990, when she turned to politics. Under Chancellor Helmut Kohl she served as minister for women and youth and later as minister for the environment and nuclear safety. She became leader of the Christian Democratic Union in 2000. In 2005 she became the first woman to serve as Germany's chancellor, and voters returned her to office three more times. Her long tenure included the eurozone debt crisis. She received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

American lawyer turned mystery writer who created the famous fictional defense attorney Perry Mason.
Erle Stanley Gardner was an American lawyer and author best known for creating the courtroom hero Perry Mason. Born in Malden, Massachusetts, he was admitted to the California bar in 1911 and practiced law before turning to fiction. His first Perry Mason novels, The Case of the Velvet Claws and The Case of the Sulky Girl, both appeared in 1933. He eventually wrote eighty Perry Mason books and oversaw their adaptation for radio, film, and television. He also wrote a series about district attorney Doug Selby and, under the pen name A.A. Fair, stories about detectives Bertha Cool and Donald Lam. Many of his nearly 100 mystery novels each sold more than a million copies.
