Roald Amundsen
Born July 16, 1872
Norwegian polar explorer who led the first expedition to reach the South Pole and first sailed the Northwest Passage.
Roald Amundsen was born near Oslo, Norway. He began studying medicine to please his mother but soon turned to a life of exploration. In 1897 he sailed with a Belgian expedition aboard the Belgica, the first group to spend a winter in the Antarctic. Between 1903 and 1906, aboard the small ship Gjøa, he became the first to navigate the Northwest Passage through the Arctic waters of North America. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and four companions, traveling with dog sledges, reached the South Pole, about a month before Robert Falcon Scott's team. In 1926 he flew over the North Pole in the airship Norge with Lincoln Ellsworth and Umberto Nobile, the first air crossing of the Arctic Basin.

Sanders spent all ten of his pro seasons with Detroit and was picked for the Pro Bowl every year. In 1997 he ran for 2,053 yards and shared the league MVP award with Brett Favre. He retired after the 1998 season, still near his peak, with 15,269 career rushing yards. He entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
