English actor of stage and screen best known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Born July 13, 1944
Hungarian designer and architect who invented the Rubik's Cube, the colorful puzzle that became a worldwide craze.
Ernő Rubik was born in Budapest, Hungary. His father was an engineer and aircraft designer, and his mother was a poet. Rubik trained in architecture and sculpture in Budapest and later taught design at the city's College of Applied Arts. While looking for a way to demonstrate ideas about three-dimensional space, he built the puzzle cube that now carries his name, and he filed a patent for it in January 1975. After its worldwide launch in 1980, the cube became a craze, winning Britain's Toy of the Year award and joining the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1981. Rubik also designed other puzzles, including Rubik's Snake and Rubik's Magic, and founded a design studio.
