Henry David Thoreau
Born July 12, 1817
American Transcendentalist writer and naturalist best known for Walden and the essay Civil Disobedience.
Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard in 1837. He taught school and helped with his family's pencil business before becoming close to Ralph Waldo Emerson, who served as his mentor and drew him into the Transcendentalist movement. In 1845 he built a small cabin on Emerson's land at Walden Pond and lived there for more than two years. That experience became the basis of Walden (1854), a classic book about simple living and close observation of nature. His 1849 essay Civil Disobedience argued that people should follow their conscience rather than obey unjust laws. Its ideas later influenced Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Thoreau was also a committed abolitionist.

George Eastman
Born July 12, 1854
American inventor and businessman who founded Eastman Kodak and made photography easy and affordable for ordinary people.
George Eastman was born in Waterville, New York. He left school at 14 to support his family, working as an insurance clerk and then at a Rochester bank. After taking up photography, he spent years experimenting at home and patented a machine for coating dry photographic plates. He then started the business that became Eastman Kodak. In 1888 he introduced the Kodak camera, sold with the slogan "You press the button, we do the rest," and in 1900 the inexpensive Brownie camera followed. His flexible film also helped make motion pictures possible. Eastman gave more than $100 million to schools, hospitals, and the arts, including MIT, the University of Rochester, and the Eastman School of Music.

Oscar Hammerstein II
Born July 12, 1895
American lyricist who partnered with Richard Rodgers on Oklahoma!, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music.
Oscar Hammerstein II was born in New York City into a theater family; his grandfather was an opera impresario. While studying law at Columbia University, he wrote lyrics for student shows, then left law school to work in the theater. With composer Jerome Kern he wrote Show Boat (1927), and in 1943 he created Carmen Jones, based on Bizet's opera. That same year he began his famous partnership with Richard Rodgers with Oklahoma! The team went on to write Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music, creating eleven stage musicals in all. Their work earned two Pulitzer Prizes and other major honors. "Edelweiss" was the last song Hammerstein wrote.
