David Hockney
Born July 9, 1937
English painter famous for bright California swimming pool scenes such as A Bigger Splash and for inventive photo collages.
David Hockney is an English artist from Bradford, Yorkshire. He studied at Bradford College of Art and then at the Royal College of Art in London, and his early work drew on Pop art and photography. After moving to Los Angeles in 1966, he was inspired by California's light and heat and painted well-known swimming pool scenes such as A Bigger Splash. He later made "joiners," collages built from many photographs arranged together. Always eager to try new tools, he began making pictures on iPhones and iPads in 2009. He has also designed sets for the stage. In a 2011 poll of British artists, he was named the most influential British artist of all time.
