Born July 6, 1907
Mexican painter known for her bold, colorful self-portraits inspired by Mexican folk art and culture.
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter born in Coyoacán, Mexico City, in the family home known as the Blue House. Largely self-taught, she became known for vivid self-portraits that drew on Mexican folk art, bright colors, and dreamlike images. She often painted herself in traditional Mexican clothing. In 1929 she married the famous muralist Diego Rivera. Her first solo show took place in New York in 1938, and her work was shown in Paris in 1939. The Louvre acquired one of her self-portraits. Although some critics called her a Surrealist, she said she painted her reality, not her dreams. The Blue House is now the Frida Kahlo Museum.
