John D. Rockefeller
Born July 8, 1839
American industrialist who built Standard Oil and later became one of the nation's leading philanthropists.
John D. Rockefeller was an American businessman from Richford, New York. In 1863 he opened his first oil refinery near Cleveland, and in 1870 he and several partners incorporated the Standard Oil Company. Within about a dozen years, Standard Oil controlled nearly all of the oil business in the United States, and Rockefeller became one of the richest people in the world. In the late 1890s he stepped back from running the company and turned his attention to giving. He helped found the University of Chicago, the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University), the General Education Board, and the Rockefeller Foundation. Over his lifetime he gave away more than $500 million.
