Nelson Mandela
Born July 18, 1918
South African anti-apartheid leader, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and the country's first Black president.
Nelson Mandela was a South African leader who became his country's first Black president, serving from 1994 to 1999. Born in the Transkei region, he attended the University College of Fort Hare and later studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and spent decades opposing apartheid, South Africa's system of racial segregation. After his release from prison in February 1990, he was elected president of the ANC in 1991. He then negotiated with President F.W. de Klerk to dismantle apartheid and bring about a peaceful shift to majority rule. For that work, the two men shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.

Chosen in 1959 as one of the original seven Mercury astronauts, he piloted Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, making the first American crewed orbital flight and circling Earth three times. Ohio voters elected him to the Senate in 1974, and he served there until 1999. In 1998, at age 77, he returned to space aboard the shuttle Discovery. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
