George Gershwin
Born September 26, 1898
American composer and pianist who wrote Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, and the folk opera Porgy and Bess.
George Gershwin was an American composer and pianist born in Brooklyn, New York, to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents. As a teenager he left school to work as a song plugger in New York's Tin Pan Alley, and his first published song appeared in 1916. Teaming with his older brother Ira, who wrote the lyrics, he became a leading force on Broadway in the 1920s, producing standards like "Someone to Watch Over Me." Bandleader Paul Whiteman commissioned his Rhapsody in Blue, which premiered in 1924 and became a landmark in American music. He followed it with the Concerto in F and An American in Paris. His 1935 folk opera Porgy and Bess is ranked among the most important American works of the 20th century.

Born September 26, 1888
American-born British poet and critic, author of The Waste Land and winner of the 1948 Nobel Prize in Literature.
T. S. Eliot was a poet, playwright, and critic born in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied at Harvard and later in Paris and at Oxford before settling in England, where he became a British citizen in 1927. His 1915 poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" marked him as a leading voice of Modernist poetry, and The Waste Land (1922) became one of the defining poems of the century. He also wrote Four Quartets, the play Murder in the Cathedral, and Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, which inspired the hit 1981 musical Cats. For decades he worked as an editor at the publisher Faber & Faber. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948.
