Nina Simone
Born February 21, 1933
American singer, pianist, and songwriter whose blend of jazz, blues, folk, and classical music made her a civil rights voice.
Nina Simone was an American singer and pianist born Eunice Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina. She started playing piano at age three and later studied classical music at the Juilliard School in New York. When the Curtis Institute of Music turned her down, she moved toward jazz and blues, and she began singing in an Atlantic City nightclub in 1954. She chose the stage name Nina from a Spanish nickname and Simone after the French actress Simone Signoret. Her recording of "I Loves You, Porgy" became her first hit. In the 1960s she wrote protest songs such as "Mississippi Goddam" and "Four Women" and became known as a voice of the civil rights movement.

John Lewis
Born February 21, 1940
American civil rights leader who chaired SNCC, marched at Selma, and represented Georgia in Congress for decades.

While studying at the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, he joined the student movement for civil rights. He took part in the 1961 Freedom Rides and chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee beginning in 1963. At 23 he was the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington. In 1965 he helped lead the Selma march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, an event that built support for the Voting Rights Act. He later served on the Atlanta City Council and, starting in 1986, won election to the U.S. House from Georgia's 5th District. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
