Kurt Cobain
Born February 20, 1967
American singer, guitarist, and songwriter who led Nirvana and helped bring grunge rock into the mainstream.
Kurt Cobain was an American musician from Aberdeen, Washington. He showed a gift for art and music as a child, and in high school he discovered punk rock through the local band the Melvins. In the late 1980s he formed Nirvana with bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl joined the group in 1990. After the debut album Bleach (1989), Nirvana released Nevermind (1991), whose single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" became a huge hit and pushed the album to number one. The band followed with In Utero (1993) and the acoustic MTV Unplugged in New York. As Nirvana's singer, guitarist, and main songwriter, Cobain became a defining voice of 1990s grunge.
