Born February 18, 1745
Italian physicist who invented the electric battery; the electrical unit called the volt is named for him.
Alessandro Volta was an Italian physicist from Como, in Lombardy. He taught physics in Como and later at the University of Pavia. Early in his career he improved a device for producing static electricity, the electrophorus, and he identified methane gas. After Luigi Galvani reported experiments with frog legs and metals, Volta argued that the metals themselves could produce an electric current. To show this, in 1800 he built the voltaic pile, a stack of zinc and silver or copper disks separated by cloth or paper soaked in salt water. It was the first battery to supply a steady current. Napoleon made him a count, and in 1881 the volt was named in his honor.
