Nicolaus Copernicus
Born February 19, 1473
Polish Renaissance astronomer who proposed that the planets, including Earth, travel around the Sun.
Nicolaus Copernicus was an astronomer born in Toruń, in what is now Poland, to a merchant family. He studied at the University of Kraków and then in Italy at Bologna, Padua, and Ferrara, where he earned a doctorate in church law. With help from his uncle, the Bishop of Warmia, he became a canon of the cathedral chapter and later lived mainly in Frombork. He also worked as his uncle's secretary and physician and wrote on currency reform. His landmark book, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, was printed in 1543. It argued that the Sun, not Earth, sits at the center and that Earth spins daily on its axis. His ideas helped launch the Scientific Revolution.
