George Washington
Born February 22, 1732
Commander of the Continental Army in the American Revolution and the first president of the United States.
George Washington grew up in colonial Virginia and worked as a land surveyor while still a teenager. He gained military experience leading Virginia forces in the French and Indian War and later sat in the Virginia House of Burgesses. In 1775 the Second Continental Congress made him commander in chief of the Continental Army, which he led through the Revolutionary War to the decisive victory at Yorktown in 1781. He presided over the 1787 Constitutional Convention, which produced the U.S. Constitution. Chosen unanimously as the nation's first president, he served two terms from 1789 to 1797, forming the first cabinet and issuing the Proclamation of Neutrality. His Farewell Address of 1796 warned against foreign entanglements. He made his home at Mount Vernon.
