Malcolm X
Born May 19, 1925
American Muslim minister and civil rights-era leader who became a powerful voice for Black pride and self-determination.
Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska. He joined the Nation of Islam, took the surname X to reject what he called his slave name, and became the leading minister at its mosque in Harlem. His forceful speeches drew thousands of followers, and he became the group's best-known spokesman, promoting Black pride and Black nationalism. In 1964 he left the organization, made a pilgrimage to Mecca, and took the name El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. That year he also founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity. The Autobiography of Malcolm X, written with Alex Haley, became a bestseller and made him a hero to many young Black Americans.

Lorraine Hansberry
Born May 19, 1930
American playwright whose drama A Raisin in the Sun was the first play by a Black woman staged on Broadway.
Lorraine Hansberry was an American playwright and writer from Chicago. She studied at the University of Wisconsin and other schools before moving to New York, where she wrote for the publication Freedom. In 1959 her play A Raisin in the Sun opened on Broadway, making it the first drama by an African American woman produced there. The play follows a working-class Black family in Chicago as they chase their dreams, and it drew on her own family's fight against housing discrimination. It won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and became a 1961 film. Her other works include The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window and To Be Young, Gifted and Black.
