Arthur Conan Doyle
Born May 22, 1859
Scottish writer and physician who created the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson.
Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and studied medicine at Edinburgh University. There he assisted Dr. Joseph Bell, a surgeon whose sharp powers of observation later inspired Sherlock Holmes. After earning his degree in 1881, Doyle worked as a ship's doctor and tried to build a medical practice. Holmes first appeared in A Study in Scarlet, and Doyle went on to write four novels and 56 short stories about the detective and Dr. Watson, including The Hound of the Baskervilles. He also wrote historical fiction such as The White Company, adventure novels such as The Lost World, poetry, and plays. He was knighted in 1902, partly for his writing about the Boer War.

Hamlet (1948) won Academy Awards for best picture and best actor. In 1962 he became the first director of Britain's National Theatre company, a post he held until 1973. He was knighted in 1947 and in 1970 became the first actor given a life peerage, which let him sit in the House of Lords.
