Born May 24, 1819
Queen of the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901 whose long reign gave its name to the Victorian era.
Queen Victoria was born at Kensington Palace in London, the only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, a son of King George III. She became queen in 1837 at the age of 18 and reigned for almost 64 years, at that time the longest reign in British history. In 1840 she married Prince Albert, and the couple had nine children, many of whom married into other European royal families. Her son later became King Edward VII. Her time on the throne is linked with industrial growth, economic progress, and the expansion of the British Empire, and she also took the title Empress of India. Her Golden and Diamond Jubilees in 1887 and 1897 were marked with large public celebrations.

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit
Born May 24, 1686
Physicist and instrument maker who built the mercury thermometer and created the Fahrenheit temperature scale.
Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit was a physicist and maker of scientific instruments, born in Gdańsk (then called Danzig). After training as a merchant in Amsterdam, he turned to building precise instruments and spent most of his life in the Netherlands. He first made thermometers using alcohol and later switched to mercury, producing some of the first thermometers that gave consistent readings. He then devised the temperature scale that bears his name, on which water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. He also found that water can stay liquid below its freezing point and that a liquid's boiling point changes with air pressure. He joined Britain's Royal Society in 1724, and his scale is still used every day in the United States.
