Carl Linnaeus
Born May 23, 1707
Swedish botanist who created the modern system for classifying living things and giving them two-part scientific names.
Carl Linnaeus was born in Råshult, in the Småland region of Sweden. He was the first to set out clear principles for defining genera and species and to give organisms names in a uniform way, a method known as binomial nomenclature. His book Systema Naturae, written before he turned 30, made him famous, and his system eventually covered plants, animals, and minerals. He gave humans the name Homo sapiens. In 1741 he became a professor of medicine at Uppsala University, where he lived in the Academic Garden and led popular nature excursions. He sent students on expeditions to distant lands, and they shipped seeds and specimens back to him. He was later made a nobleman for his work.
