Albrecht Dürer
Born May 21, 1471
German Renaissance painter and printmaker who transformed woodcuts and engravings into an independent art form.
Albrecht Dürer grew up in Nuremberg, where he first learned the craft of his father, a goldsmith, and then trained with the painter Michael Wolgemut. Two trips to Italy exposed him to Renaissance ideas about color, design, and the classical past. Before he turned 30, he had finished celebrated woodcut series such as The Apocalypse. His engravings, including Adam and Eve, Knight, Death, and the Devil, and Melencolia I, showed a new range of tone and drama in printmaking. He also painted altarpieces, portraits, and striking self-portraits. Dürer worked as court artist for Emperors Maximilian I and Charles V and wrote books on human proportion and perspective.

Andrei Sakharov
Born May 21, 1921
Soviet nuclear physicist who became a leading human rights advocate and won the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize.
Andrei Sakharov was a Russian physicist born in Moscow. He earned his physics degree from Moscow University in 1942 and later completed doctoral work under the physicist Igor Tamm. For about twenty years he worked in secret on Soviet nuclear weapons research and helped Tamm develop the country's first hydrogen bomb. Over time he spoke out against nuclear testing. In 1968 he published an essay calling for arms reduction and intellectual freedom, and in 1970 he helped found a Committee for Human Rights. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975, although Soviet officials kept him from traveling to Oslo. He was sent into internal exile in Gorky in 1980, allowed back to Moscow in 1986, and elected to the Congress of People's Deputies in 1989.

Fats Waller
Born May 21, 1904
American jazz pianist, singer, and composer known for the classics "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose."
Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller was born in New York City, the son of a Baptist minister. He started piano lessons at age six and also learned the organ. As a teenager he came under the influence of James P. Johnson, a founder of the stride style of jazz piano. Waller played organ at Harlem's Lincoln Theatre and went on to radio, recordings, and Hollywood films. With lyricist Andy Razaf he wrote "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Ain't Misbehavin'" in the late 1920s, songs that became part of the Great American Songbook. He led a small group called Fats Waller and His Rhythm. Mixing brilliant playing with broad comedy, he became one of the few jazz musicians of his era to win wide commercial success.
