Edward Jenner
Born May 17, 1749
English doctor who pioneered vaccination by using cowpox to protect people against smallpox.
Edward Jenner was an English country doctor born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire. After an apprenticeship, he studied in London under the well-known surgeon John Hunter, then returned home to practice medicine in Berkeley. In 1796 he took material from a cowpox sore on the hand of a milkmaid, Sarah Nelmes, and used it to inoculate a boy named James Phipps. The test showed that cowpox could protect people against smallpox. Jenner described his method in his 1798 Inquiry, which laid the scientific basis for vaccination. He also studied the nesting habits of the cuckoo. His work started the long effort that eventually wiped out smallpox around the world.
