American author and illustrator of children's books, best known for the classic Where the Wild Things Are.
Maurice Sendak was an American writer and illustrator of children's books from Brooklyn, New York. He drew constantly as a child and went on to illustrate more than 80 books by other authors before creating his own, starting with Kenny's Window in 1956. His 1963 picture book Where the Wild Things Are, about a boy named Max who sails to a land of monsters, won the 1964 Caldecott Medal and was made into a 2009 movie.
