Alfred Nobel
Born October 21, 1833
Swedish chemist, inventor, and industrialist who invented dynamite and used his fortune to create the Nobel Prizes.
Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, and businessman born in Stockholm. As a teenager he could already speak Swedish, Russian, French, English, and German. Searching for a safer way to handle the powerful liquid explosive nitroglycerin, he invented dynamite in 1867 by blending it with a kind of absorbent earth, and he also developed a detonator, or blasting cap. Nobel built factories in many countries and eventually held more than 350 patents. He lived in several nations and was known as a restless traveler who favored Paris. In his will he directed that his large fortune fund annual prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace, which became the famous Nobel Prizes.

Dizzy Gillespie
Born October 21, 1917
American jazz trumpeter and bandleader who helped create bebop and wrote standards like "A Night in Tunisia."
Dizzy Gillespie, born John Birks Gillespie in Cheraw, South Carolina, was a brilliant jazz trumpeter and composer. In the late 1930s and early 1940s he played in bands led by stars such as Cab Calloway, Earl Hines, and Billy Eckstine. Working with saxophonist Charlie Parker in New York jam sessions, he helped invent bebop, a fast, complex style of jazz. His big band of the late 1940s mixed bebop with Afro-Cuban rhythms, and he wrote classics including "A Night in Tunisia," "Salt Peanuts," and "Manteca." Fans knew him instantly by his puffed-out cheeks, beret, and upturned trumpet bell. He also toured abroad as a musical ambassador and received Kennedy Center Honors in 1990.
