Franz Liszt
Born October 22, 1811
Hungarian composer and dazzling piano virtuoso of the Romantic era, famous for his Transcendental Études and Piano Sonata in B Minor.
Franz Liszt was a Hungarian pianist and composer born in Raiding. Encouraged by his musical father, he began writing music at age eight and studied in Vienna with Carl Czerny and Antonio Salieri. After early triumphs in Vienna and Paris, he was inspired by violinist Niccolò Paganini to push his piano technique as far as it could go. During the 1840s he toured Europe as a celebrated virtuoso, then gave up regular concerts to focus on composing and on helping forward-looking composers. His major works include the Transcendental Études, the Piano Sonata in B Minor, and A Faust Symphony. His bold, chromatic harmonies pointed toward the music of the 20th century. His daughter Cosima married composer Richard Wagner.
