Born April 26, 1785
American naturalist and artist famous for The Birds of America, his book of detailed bird paintings.
John James Audubon was an American naturalist and artist born in Les Cayes in what is now Haiti, the son of a French plantation owner. In 1803 he moved to a family estate at Mill Grove, Pennsylvania. He traveled widely across America to study and paint birds, posing specimens to look lifelike and drawing them from nature. After failing to find a publisher in Philadelphia, he found support in Britain, and his masterwork, The Birds of America, was published in London from 1827 to 1838 with more than 400 plates. He later produced Ornithological Biography and The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. The National Audubon Society, founded in 1905, carries his name.
