Ella Fitzgerald
Born April 25, 1917
American jazz singer known as the First Lady of Song, famed for her scat singing and Songbook albums.
Ella Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer from Newport News, Virginia. In 1934 she won an amateur contest at Harlem's Apollo Theater, and soon after she joined Chick Webb's band. Her 1938 hit "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," which she helped write, went to the top of the charts. With a range of three octaves, she became famous for scat singing, using her voice to improvise like a jazz instrument. Starting in 1956, she recorded a celebrated series of Songbook albums featuring music by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, and others. At the first Grammy Awards in 1958, she became the first African American woman to win. She was known as the "First Lady of Song."

Al Pacino is an American actor born in New York City to a family with Sicilian roots and raised in the Bronx. He trained at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg and first made his name on stage, winning a Tony Award for Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? His fame grew when he played Michael Corleone in The Godfather in 1972 and its sequels. He is known for an intense acting style in films such as Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, and The Irishman. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Scent of a Woman in 1992. He has also won Emmy Awards for TV films and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

Italian inventor who developed wireless telegraphy, sent the first radio signals across the Atlantic, and won a Nobel Prize.
Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian inventor born in Bologna to an Italian father and an Irish mother. As a young man he studied the work of scientists like Maxwell and Hertz. In 1895 he sent wireless signals about a mile and a half across his father's estate. He then moved his work to England, where in 1896 he received the first patent for a wireless telegraphy system, and he founded his own telegraph company in London in 1899. In December 1901 he sent the first wireless signals across the Atlantic Ocean, from Cornwall to Newfoundland. In 1909 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Braun. He is credited with creating the first practical system of radio communication.
