During the War of 1812 he served as a scout and later a sergeant. He entered politics in the Tennessee state legislature in 1821 and went on to the U.S. House of Representatives. He first backed Andrew Jackson but later opposed him. Crockett played up his image as a rugged backwoodsman, and he also wrote books about his adventures. In 1836, holding the rank of colonel, he joined the defenders of the Alamo in the Texas Revolution.
