Born August 19, 1883
French fashion designer whose simple, comfortable styles, little black dress, and Chanel No. 5 perfume reshaped women's fashion.
Coco Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel in Saumur, France. She learned to sew as a girl from nuns who ran the orphanage where she was raised, and she picked up the nickname "Coco" while singing in clubs. In 1910 she opened a hat shop on the Rue Cambon in Paris, then expanded to the resort towns of Deauville and Biarritz. Her relaxed jersey dresses freed women from stiff, tight clothing. In the 1920s she introduced Chanel No. 5 perfume and the little black dress, and in 1925 her collarless-jacket suit. After years away from fashion, she made a celebrated comeback in the 1950s, and her quilted bags and costume jewelry remain classics.

Gene Roddenberry
Born August 19, 1921
American television writer and producer who created the science-fiction series Star Trek.
Gene Roddenberry was born in El Paso, Texas. During World War II he flew 89 combat missions with the U.S. Army Air Forces, and afterward he worked as a commercial pilot and then as an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. He moved into television as a screenwriter and producer. In 1964 he created Star Trek, which premiered in 1966 and ran for three seasons. The show found a much larger audience in reruns, and it grew into a long-running franchise of television series and feature films. Roddenberry received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985 and was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame and the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
