Greta Garbo
Born September 18, 1905
Swedish-born Hollywood film star of the silent and early sound eras, remembered for Grand Hotel, Camille, and Ninotchka.
Greta Garbo, born Greta Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden, worked as a store clerk before landing small film parts and studying acting at the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Director Mauritz Stiller gave her a leading role in The Saga of Gösta Berling and her famous stage name, and she joined MGM in Hollywood in 1925. She quickly became an international star in silent dramas such as Flesh and the Devil. Her first talking picture, Anna Christie, was advertised with the slogan "Garbo talks!" Later hits included Grand Hotel, Queen Christina, Camille, and the comedy Ninotchka. After Two-Faced Woman in 1941, she left the movies for good and lived quietly in New York. She received an honorary Oscar in 1955.

Samuel Johnson
Born September 18, 1709
English writer and critic best known for his landmark 1755 Dictionary of the English Language.
Samuel Johnson was an English essayist, poet, critic, and dictionary maker from Lichfield, Staffordshire. He studied at Pembroke College, Oxford, but left without a degree, and later built his reputation as a writer in London. His poems London and The Vanity of Human Wishes were followed by The Rambler, a series of essays he wrote between 1750 and 1752. His biggest project, A Dictionary of the English Language, appeared in 1755. He also wrote the moral tale Rasselas, produced an edition of Shakespeare's plays, and wrote The Lives of the Poets. Johnson helped found a famous circle called the Literary Club, and his friend James Boswell recorded his life and conversation in a celebrated biography.
