Sophia Loren
Born September 20, 1934
Italian film star who became the first actress to win an Oscar for a performance in a non-English-language film.
Sophia Loren, born Sofia Villani Scicolone in Rome, grew up in the poor town of Pozzuoli near Naples. Beauty contests led her into movies in the early 1950s, and producer Carlo Ponti, whom she married in 1957, helped guide her career. She rose from small parts to starring roles in Italian films such as The Gold of Naples, then made her Hollywood debut in The Pride and the Passion. Her performance in Two Women earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, the first Oscar for acting in a foreign-language film. Other well-known films include Houseboat, El Cid, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, and Marriage, Italian Style. She received an honorary Academy Award in 1991.
